The Cyprus Friendship Program

Posted on February 5th

Geoffrey and Tom McCarthy from the Olney Rotary Club talked about a joint Rotary and Cyprus Friendship Program.sponsored by the Olney Club. The Friendship Program was first successful in Northern Ireland as a peace-building model. In 1974 Cyprus had a civil war between Greek speaking Christians in the South West and the North Eastern Turkish speaking Moslem’s which was settled by the UN imposing a boundary line across the middle of Cyprus requiring some Greek families to move South and Turks to move North causing much bitterness. In July 2013 Maryland families hosted, for a month, seven pairs of Cypriot teens, each pair comprising one Greek speaking and one Turkish speaking teen, for training in conflict resolution, leadership and peace building.
