National Transportation Safety Board

The NTSB is an independent federal agency charged with determining the probable cause of transportation (aviation, railroad, highway and pipeline) accidents; making recommendations to congress and other federal agencies to prevent their recurrence; conducting special studies and investigations; and coordinating resources to assist victims and their families after an accident. The NTSB was made independent in 1974, has 5 board members appointed by the president, and has 400 employees (300 in Washington). There are 1500 accidents per year. For minor accidents NTSB gets assistance from local agencies. Eric Fielding is the training program advisor for NTSB. He is responsible for the development and implementation of the workforce development program. The NTSB website is www.ntsb.gov
