Mike Durso was a Jr High School and Sr High School Principal for 32 years.  There are eight board members plus a student board member.  He said the student perspective was helpful.  There are 156k students and 50k get a free lunch.  85% of the budget is for personnel.  The main objective is to improve reading and get parental involvement.   For one third of the students, English is a second language.  For best student education results, they should be safe, happy and challenged.


Gregory Wims – Rotary Foundation

Gregory Wims is the District 7620 Governor Nominee. He is a Past President of the Bethesda Chevy Chase Rotary Club and has held several Assistant Governor positions. Gregory is decendent of 8 generations of up County tenet farmers. His father was illiterate and Gregory read to him until he died at age 90. On the Rotary Foundation’s 100 birthday he talked about Foundation projects. We participated with his club in a water project in a Kenya girls school and sponsored 2 girls to attend the university. Gregory has visited the school repeatedly to judge its progress. For $7 per baby birth deaths have been significantly reduced in Africa.


Liz Mizell – Luke’s Wing

As a fund raising professional, Liz Mizell has over five years experience in the nonprofit sector serving in a broad range of roles with increasing responsibility.  She was recruited as Director of Corporate Sponsorships for Luke’s Wings in January 2015.  Luke’s Wings books flights for the families of wounded veterans to come to see them at Walter Read Hospital in Bethesda. Luke’s Wings has a contract with Delta to pool donated frequent flyer miles to book flights for Vets visits
