Review of Rotary Village in Habaraduwa,
(built after the Tsunami)
and
Development plans for 2008-2009
In August 2008, some members of the club re-visited Habaraduwa Community center
and a few houses constructed two and half years ago by the club in the area now
known as Rotary village.
The purpose of the visit was to review the progress of the Rotary village community
and to help Habaraduwa Rotary Community Corp to determine the ways in which
they could run the Community Centre effectively and independently while making it
self-financing and sustainable. But, the club is still prepared to give them any extra
help and support needed from time to time. For this reason, the Board allocated Rs.
1.65 Million to the Rotary Village Development budget for year 2008-09, which
includes estimates for: (a) two school libraries and equipment for a computer centre,
(b) facilities for community centres, (c) a play-ground for Gemunupura, (d)
completion of two non-Tsunami houses, (e) up-grading water supply scheme, (f)
home-gardens for 50 families etc.
During the visit, initial contributions were made to families, school principles and
Community Corp.

At the meeting of RCC held in the Community Centre hall
The visiting Rotarians also paid short visits to a few families in the Rotary village and
the transformation of the village during the last two years was remarkable. Rotary
houses were constructed in 3 locations in Habaraduwa. The following pictures are of
two families living in the 3rd location where houses were given to deserving people
who were not directly affected by Tsunami but were living in sub-standard housing.
These pictures show the houses before and after the transformation of the village.

This new community which came to existence as a result of a horrible disaster is now
moving on with remarkable enthusiasm and unity. There is a noticeable community
spirit and interest to support each other and the RCC. Most of their houses have been
maintained very well, with small gardens and planted fruit trees. The community has
already started to improve their home gardens, with the funds from the club.
It is pleasing to note that Rotary Club of Colombo West, supported by oversees sister
clubs, Individual Rotarians and non-Rotary contributors continue to 'Make Dreams
Real', for deserving communities, families and individuals in this country.
We plan to visit the second village and RCC at Bentota in the near future for a review
and give them the necessary support.
Thank you,
